Australia's Antarctic Program opened its 2027–28 recruitment campaign. Its jobs portal currently lists 28 role types in Antarctica, while an Australian Antarctic Division announcement dated 1 October describes more than 200 contracts. The number of role types is not the same as the number of individual vacancies.

01WHAT JOBS ARE INVOLVED?

The listed categories include electrical and mechanical trades, carpentry, catering, refrigeration, telecommunications, aerodrome operations, fuel logistics, field support and specialist roles. Conditions differ by job. Existing expeditioners, merit-pool candidates and new applicants may follow different application pathways.

02CAN ANYONE APPLY FROM OVERSEAS?

Do not assume this is open international recruitment. Australian citizenship is generally required for Australian Public Service appointments. The AAP describes limited circumstances in which other eligible candidates may be considered when suitable Australians cannot be found. Some communications/security-cleared positions are restricted to Australian citizens. Every candidate must check the exact vacancy notice and the official eligibility guidance.

03WHAT DOES SELECTION INVOLVE?

The AAP says the recruitment process can take up to nine months, with written applications, technical interviews, medical and psychological checks, suitability assessments and other stages. Skills are essential, but so are the ability to live in a small isolated community and to comply with safety and environmental requirements.

04TWO DIFFERENT OFFICIAL DEADLINES

As checked on 18 October 2026, the official jobs and applicant-information pages state 1 November 2026; the AAD news release dated 1 October states 31 October. This discrepancy has not been resolved. Check the deadline for your particular role, taking care not to rely on a guessed cut-off time. Where applicable, act before the earlier stated date.

05HOW TO PROCEED

Use the official AAP jobs site, read each position description and select the appropriate application route. RADAR ANTÁRTIDA is an independent information service, not the recruiter or application processor.
